Recreating lists of years past

It's dark. It's grim. There's a big eye that's terrorizing. Suck it, Sauron!

Recreating lists of years past

Postby afeinman » Mon Aug 14, 2017 3:10 pm

My first foray into 40k was a mix of "what looked cool" and "what I can get painted in time for this league", but it hung together surprisingly well, and if not for Paul, I would have Won It All.

Basically it was:

Grey Knights terminator HQ, with small terminator retinue (not actually a retinue back then)
Land Raider
Two or three squads of GK power armor guys, some with psycannons
Two squads of Sisters with flamer/multimeltas
Seraphim with Inferno pistols
Callidus assassin

It was a lot of fun, and had a lot of different units that were good at different things, which forced me to learn tactics(!).

These days, that's 3 or possibly 4 lists...which is to say, in the Index, they're listed in four different places. I'm not clear on how to mix the lists; obviously, you can "Do whatever you want", but if you're trying to play battleforged or wtf they call Lists That Follow The Rules these days, I'm fuzzy.

Can you just throw in an assassin in another list? Obviously they won't benefit from, e.g., HQ traits, but...am I missing a rules packet somewhere?

They all have either keyword <Imperium> so that will be a battleforged army.

Yep, what Mason said... basically if they all have a keyword in common... i.e. "IMPERIUM" in this case then they can go into the same army AND into the same detachment. There's some nuance in there about who can ride in what transport and stuff, but for the most part they can go into the same list.

The new Dexes are starting to put some restrictions on the detachments... like if you want "Legion rules" for Chaos, then the entire detachment must ahve a specific keyword...same thing with the new marines... so they can go into the same army, but might not be able to fit into one detachment without losing something.

I recreated my Coteaz list with a few modifications and ended up taking things from seven different index sources.... but all say Imperium, so it all works!

Oh, they only have to share one keyword? Hmm.

Alright, a tougher one might be the "Tau with human auxiliaries" list, then...guess we'll leave that to the fluff sort of army.

Tau with Humans would have to be unbound and I don't think would get any command points... honestly can't say what unbound get as I haven't paid a lot of attention to them. Obviously opponent's consent is required, which against any of us is easy to get.

@Fred - modern day Coteaz is a lot tamer... it's mostly an excercise in "how diverse can I make a list"... I think the below is a nice well rounded and fluffy "Inquisition" assault list. Don't really know if it's any good, but it "feels" like fun to me!

Inquisitor Coteaz (HQ) - Inquisition

Vindicaire Assassin (Elites) - Assassins section
Callidus Assassin (Elites)

2x Crusaders (Elites) - Adeptus Ministorum section
3x Arco Flagellents (Elites)
3x Death Cult Assassins (Elites)
1x Ministorum Priests (HQ)
1 Sisters Rhino (DTransport)

7x Ratling Snipers (Elite) - Abhumans Section
1 Infantry Squad (Troops) - Guard Section
1 Chimera (DTransport)
1 Wyvern (Heavy Support)

1 GK Brother Captain (HQ) - Grey Knights Dex
5 GK Terminators (Troop)
1 GK Dreadnight (Heavy Support)

10 Black Templar Initiates w/5 Neophytes (Troop) - Space Marines
Land Raider Crusader (Heavy Support)

1989 points, 7 different Index Groups!

HQ: 3
Elite: 6
Troops: 3
Fast: 0
Heavy: 3
Command Points: 6

Cool looking list, Brad, chock full of 40k gothic weirdness. I look forward to playing against it! :)
