SRM Hates Money - Blood Axes

Postby SRM » Thu Oct 01, 2015 4:55 pm

So over the past few years I've been bouncing around between a few projects: my retro Ultramarines, my Dark Angels, and my ever-present Valhallans. I find the Valhallans are the army I come back and add to the most, but I've never really had a great nemesis for them. Seeing how I'm going to be working on a Space Stalingrad table at some point, I'd want another army to share their basing that I could either have folks use when they come over or I could ally with them. I figured what better nemesis for Valhallans is there than Orks? Back in the day I had an Ork army I speedpainted called Da Dezz'urt Ratz that looks pretty sloppy in hindsight, so I figured this could be my chance to have a great looking Ork army. Orks have always been my favorite xenos and I thought it'd make a nice change of pace.

For army composition, I wanted to make a very "military" feeling Ork army, with armored Orks riding in trukks, artillery in the rear, and bombers overhead. For the line infantry I plan on doing Ardboyz in halftrakks, with a mix of scratchbuilt, Forgeworld, and kitbashed vehicles representing them. I figured this would also be a fun foil to my Valhallans, with their more serious Red Army look and mix of horde infantry and armor.

So after that wall of text, here's the first squad of 'Ardboyz.

I figure for future squads I'll simplify the scheme a little. These guys are a test scheme for the army, but I'll be trying to batch paint the camo a little more in future squads. Having to go and check every guy in the squad to see if his pants are jungle camo or his shirt is urban camo was a bit of a pain, so I figure by painting them slightly more uniform it'll speed up painting them. Either way, I'm happy with how they came out and there'll be more to come!

Looks awesome... but your affection for horde armies means you really need to seek therapy! :)

A thought - as a counterpart to the Soviet IG Horde, maybe base these guys loosely around Finnish WW2 forces? They were German Allied and fought the Soviets to an effective draw in the Winter War.

I'll look up those Finns! I didn't want to go too obvious and do Nazi Orks or whatever, because then I'd also be "that Nazi Ork guy" and nobody wants that.

Yeah, the Finns would let you use the German Greys and such to counter the "Soviet greens" on vehicles. For symbols you could do the German Cross but in Blue which the Finns tended to use for symbols. (The blue, not the cross... most of the time they used the swastika, but screw that.) They basically were caught between a rock and a hard place and forced to ally with the Germans due to the presence of Russia right across their border. Mostly they weren't anything like the Germans, especially late war. I say mostly because there were definitely a few bad apples, but the Finns mostly get romanticized in history simply because they stood up against a very young and inexperienced Red Army that was just turning into the juggernaut it would become.

Plus Finns as a whole are pretty cool people.

Let me know if you need any orks bits!

Also, there are so many weird Ork players, Nazi Orks aren't that bad. They still have some orks with the spike on their helmets after all.

I also like the idea of maintaining consistent basing. Think of how cool the photos will look!

Nobody wants that at all, but we do want what you're doing here with these Orks.

Epic. That's how those photos will look. Epic! Especially when Space Stalingrad starts getting built.

Some day! I just need to find the time and space to do the Stalingrad table, since one bedroom apartments aren't exactly bursting with room.

I kitbashed a Taurox and a Trukk kit, and I came out with two Orky machinations which will serve as trukks in the new army:

Holeyshitballs! I love those trukks!

I am totally looting your idea when I get back to painting more orks. It looks like the two kits were made for each other!

Jack - that's thematically appropriate, have at! I think the Taurox could look downright Orky with minimal conversion, but I'm glad I got to make it into the Scrumvee and the flatbed (clever name pending) trukk.
