Accept any challenge, no matter the odds - Black Templars

Postby SRM » Tue Jan 24, 2017 7:41 pm

I've recently had the itch to paint some Black Templars. I don't know if it's the Gathering Storm stuff, the desire to paint a different scheme, or just because I hate the psychic phase so much, but I started working on some of these guys. I did up a few test models, namely a pair of Sword Brethren, an Initiate, and their Marshall, Siegward:

Next, I've got a stack of 10 Initiates and Helbrecht on the painting table, and plenty to go. The idea behind this army is to get as many of the bits and kits I've had lying around forever and put them to use in a coherent army. Of course I ended up buying a few Tactical squads and Black Templar accessory sprues, but hey, I had to start somewhere, didn't I?

I finally got around to painting the 30th anniversary Marine, and I did him up in the old Field Police colors:

I saw this new thread, and said "No. No, he couldn't. He wouldn't."

But you did... you started painting a new army.

You crazy man, you.

To be fair, the army's mostly made of leftover stuff I've just had lying around the house, but yeah, I'm pretty sure I have a problem. :burnmoney:

I'm pretty sure we all have a problem. Of the ham kind.

That was pretty much my feeling as well.

Campbell, these look great. What else are you planning to cobble together?

They do indeed look great.

So, Black Templars?

I suppose I should have seen it coming. I mean, that's classic Campbell, right? Pick the power gamer flavor of the month army and....
Oh wait, you said Black Templars?
Huh.

"Man, I really want to win more games!"
- Attributed to Campbell McLaughlin, 35 minutes before getting tabled on turn 3

Right now I've got 20 Tactical Marines, the bits for 10 Assault Marines, a bunch of Devastator bits if I feel like adding in some heavy weapons, the command tank set from Warhammer World, a mess of the old metal veterans, a box of Sternguard, and a bunch of Sword Brethren - like 15 of the guys - because I bought a box, found some for dirt cheap, and found a miscast one so I'm getting a free box from GW. On top of that I've got a few characters that I compulsively bought and I now have a use for.

So yeah, a bunch of Marines on foot with expensive close combat weapons. Classic powergamer move.

It took what felt like forever, but I've painted up my first Crusader squad:

Damn, they definitely look angry enough to be Black Templars.
Very pretty ones, too. Well done, SRM. Well done.

Thanks! Someday there will be enough of them to get summarily murdered by any army with an AP3 gun.

Did you paint this beautiful squad in a week then have the nerve to post about that being a long time?

Maybe that's the part that took so long?

Look, Lysander doesn't really kill anything but at the same time is pretty unkillable. I thought it was a fitting homage.
