Dark Angel lists

Okay, so, Brad's got the codex, the rest of us probably stole it from the onlinez already...

What's the killer build? What douchebag set of units are we going to be seeing, unpainted and barely assembled, on tables across the world?

Or did they (gasp) actually playtest it for once?

Probably a bunch of hooded marines with mindshackle scarabs in the same unit numbers with the same equipment just copied and pasted.

I'm liking the knights, but I actually don't think they are too over the top. I think the codex seems pretty well balanced. Nothing is jumping out at me as crazy, but we may have to wait for the internet to get ahold of things.

Yeah, that's my initial take as well. There's definitely powerful things in there, but they pay for them. It seems very much like Grey Knights overall. If you want the spangly death squads, you'll pay for them.

Looking at it, if you ran it as a "traditional" DA force without using the new units at all, you'll get a very nice bump in effectiveness over the old codex. The old DA Tax where everything cost 10-25% more without a cooresponding increase in effectiveness is gone. Now you're left with a characterful and well performing core list that has the ability to bolt on substantial upgrades without compromising that effectiveness.

I'd have to agree that DA "core" lists are going to fare better than Deathwing-only or Ravenwing-only lists.
The specialist forces will quickly run out of bodies at modest points levels due to per-model and upgrade costs. You can quickly run up a Deathwing Squad to 600+ points if you're not careful.
It's goign to take careful balancing of a Codex-compliant core that either assists in the dlivery of the speicalized units, or that uses specialized units to bolster their own strengths.

The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is the Tactical Squad min/max ability. A little too easy to get minimum squads with a heavy or special weapon. 6-man las/plas squads are gone, but you might see a rise in 5-man lascannon or flakk missile squads propped up with FNP auras and Shrouding-granting speeders.

Agreed... I'm less than enthusiastic about the 5 man lascannon squad. However, they get nothing for free really... no missle launchers, or flamers, or extra CCWs at all. So maybe that balances it out.

Jury is definitely out on that for me, but as an overall trend I lean towards dislike.

I've always liked the small numbers, big points army lists. With allies it seems like there's a new way to balance it out, though...who makes sense to ally with DA?

Cause it ain't Witchhunters.

Since the Dark Angels are untrustworthy backstabbers, the best choice is clearly CSM. :)

On a serious note.... Guard go well with DA thematically, and I'd argue for an Inquisition List (GK, but not GK) if it was fluffed out to be Mechanicum based (henchmen to represent techs and skitarri, etc).

(back to non serious)

Death Wing with Death Korps gives you the most angsty bang for your buck.

For the color conscious, Dark Angels and Orks go well together. Necrons are an auto clash due to the allegiance to the Blood Angels.

(back to serious)

Elysians and Death Wing would be cool thematically.
None of the other marine chapters really fit.
Witchhunters don't really fit.
Inquisition kind of fits if you counts-as it.
Crons don't fit.
Orks don't fit.
Tau doesn't really fit.
Dark Eldar don't fit.
Eldar don't fit.
...

Yeah... that's about it.

I do L-O-V-E that they made Azreal, Belial, and Sammael's FOC changers "primary detachment only." Sorry, cheese dicks, no poaching Deathwing units as troops for you!

It is nice and something that I would expect to go over into other codecii, although it does make the angles a less deseriable ally for others, but keeps flavour.

They did it in Chaos already, with the marked Lords. Plague Marines, Berserkers, Noise Marines and 1k-Sons can only be Troops in a Primary detachment.

It is cool that they're keeping a bit of a tight rein on ally shenanigans.
