Battleground X Wing Tournament

Postby Brutal Legend » Tue Mar 11, 2014 9:13 pm

If you're going to the 40k Tourney on the 22nd of March, then you may want to consider going to the X Wing Tournament on the 29th of March at Battleground. This will be the first tournament round of 2014. Wave 4 ships should be out in June. This will be your chance to play competitive squadrons from waves 1-3.

I would be very interested in hearing how this went.

I'm trying to find some stuff from their forums to post up. They had a trench. There was about 12 people there to play. It wasn't over the top competitive squadrons. There was a 2 falcon list. Everything else was different kinds of 4 ship rebel squads and 6 ship tie swarms.

It was a bit of a drive. I might try and go to events a little closer to me. They have an excellent store though.

There was a 2 falcon list.

Fluffy fluff: "Han and Chewie tried unsuccessfully to slingshot around the Durosian Anamoly to gain time while competing in the Kessel Run, and were/weren't caught in the event horizon. Years later, down-time Han and Chewie teamed up with kick-ass, now-time Lando and Nien Nunb to blow up TIE fighers real good!

With Cypher flying cover in a old Y wing.

The problem that I have with the 2 Falcon list, beyond the fluff (Unless you're fielding Han, Lando, or Chewie plus an Outer Rim Smuggler as your second and/or third Falcon model) is that it is so easy mode.

As I've pointed out before, the Falcon is one of the reasons that the Rebel's have the competitive edge because of its 360 degree fire arc. You don't have to be an experienced player to make the Falcon work for you. Then you take 2 - The combination of Lando plus either Han or Chewie and you've got a list that is going to do well even if you are hitting all those asteroid speed bumps on yourself. I anticipated the double Falcon squadron but I had never considered running out and buying a second Falcon. My "I have no skillz" squadron consists of a Falcon and 2 Y wings because everybody is firing 360 degrees.

I would be much less offended and more impressed if someone brought 2 slave 1s since that is a fun ship to fly, it looks awesome, and even though it has a rear firing arc, it's far more challenging to use than the Falcon because you have to try and get an enemy in your firing arc.

I didn't see any of the 5-ship Rebel swarms, like 2 A wings and 3 X wings/B wings. I didn't see 4 B wings either. That tells me that the game is still in its community growth period. So you can play fun fluffy lists and still be competitive. After 4th wave comes out, that's really going to alter the competitive scene because now Rebels could take 8 Z-95 headhunters and that would seriously give the 8 Tie swarm a run for its money.
