Return of GW specialist games

Postby stormboy » Thu Nov 12, 2015 8:16 pm

It seems that GW is combining FW and with Hobbit/LotR and creating a new studio. This studio will be tasked with managing and remaking GW specialist games.

Not a joke. They are building their design team now - so expect stuff to start coming in about a year (my conjecture).

Very interesting!

That's great news. Battlefleet Gothic, Bloodbowl, Necromunda, Epic, etc. That's just damned amazing.

So.... thoughts...

1. I'd LOVE to see some FW Blood Bowl Teams and Star Players. I'm sure I'd replace a team or three with FW sexiness for sure...

2. I'd HATE to see anyone at GW fuck with the Blood Bowl rules. The LRB is firmly entrenched as a stand by, but the momentum GW can provide can and will erode some of the entrenchment. If they erode it with a better product made by following the same community driven format as before, then fine. If they Age of Sigmar it, then it'll still erode the environment, just less so.

3. I'd LOVE to see BFG get brought back to the table. Update the rules abit and start producing ships that are getting really hard to find.

4. I'm MEH about Necromunda and Mordheim. Never was a fan of the "hive ganger" world or the "skaven OP rush" world... Still both settings would be excellent for FW's studios and would be nice to see "modern" sculpts at least for Necromunda.

5. Support for LOTR would be nice, especially for Isengard forces! :)

I just think that BB aside, there are better games out there for what you get from GW, aside from screaming and skulls.

Infinity is much better Sci-Fi skirmish game and you have a host of Mordheim improvements...

Dystopian Wars (and probably SW: Armada) are far superior BFG style games....

So, yeah, my concern is mostly FW will F up BB and the rest I have long moved on from.

I feel like Bloodbowl has such a DIY/fanmade community that even if Forgeworld put out new rules, good or ill, people would just use the new models for their old rulesets. Unless the new rules were really good, I can guarantee you Bloodbowlers would still use the old ones with whatever new models there are.

Mordheim and Necromunda could be great fun. While Infinity looks neat, it doesn't have the same aesthetic as the 40k universe's, and as far as I'm aware it doesn't have that RPG-style progression that makes it so fun. I'm excited for Necromunda, for the terrain if nothing else.

Even though I've already said all this, I figured I'd reply just to talk about how much I'd freaking love FW Blood Bowl teams. When I stop to comprehend the amazingness that would entail I get a little Black Orc Blocker in my pants! FW Teams would be fan freaking tastic... and yeah, if the rules sucked they'd be ignored. It would still damage the community though... just remains to be seen to what extent...

Mordheim - I had a Sigmarite Sisters, Skaven and Human warbands for this and never played more than three games. I couldn't get anyone else interested in it... ever... It seemed to devolve into this morass of imbalance... You need to find warpstone... ok, Skaven move fastest and they fight as good or better than anyone else... basically that seemed to kill any interest at all in this back in Atlanta. Sucked cause I LOVED the minis for this game...

Necromunda - I've never played a game of this either.... mostly for the reason that keeping people's attention seemed hard back in the day. Also the aesthetic, while speaking to me early on, seemed to really die off and get consumed by the more main stream fluff. Give this a shot in the arm with modern sculpts and balanced rules and I think it'll be good... Balancing the campaign/growth is tough though... if they can somehow figure out how to give it BloodBowl levels of balance so starting elements don't get WTFPWND by advanced ones then it'll be good. If they just roll out the same ruleset then it's going to go right back to being irrelevant.

One other really good Spec Game was Warmaster... That was a pretty good system for a while then they made a few rules changes that kind of broke it from a fun perspective, but for a while it was really cool and scratched the itch for "mass fantasy" battles... With both Epic and Warmaster, I'd love to see GW go to a consistent 10mm scale (good compromise from 6mm and 15mm) and basically make them Apoc style games with the same "rules" as full blown 40k/WFB... except there isn't a WFB right now... But at least on the 40k version, I'd blow a grand on tiny Space Wolves in a heartbeat. :)

Skaven (and then some of the additional crews) were ridiculously, not just because of how they might perform on the table top... but they got their own *amazing* skill set, an extra starting hero, access to a Big Guy and lots of great starting equipment. Point is, I played a fair amount of Mordheim campaigns in college when it hit. Every campaign feel apart when the Skaven player (different guys ran it) got going. The one campaign that was awesome and lasted for a while was when we all agreed not to play Skaven.

Sucks that GW sucks at balancing rules.

I have played a lot less Necromunda. My limited experience with that is the game is fun (though it uses silly 2nd edition combat rules) but as soon as someone gets "lucky" with a skill up roll then the campaign fractures.

I'd be all over Epic, and the thought of Flames of Warhammer where it's 15mm or something also is really cool to me, since you've got more potential for character than in 6mm models.

I love Necromunda, and I'd love to play more of it. Balance isn't amazing, but it's always been more of a role playing system than a super balanced skirmish game.

Yeah, thing is for RPG you've got Inquisitor... which there's a lot of talk/speculation/rampant wishing that they'll turn into Inq28 instead of 54 mm... Making Inquisitor figs in 28mm seems like a license to print money... when I think of all the specialty characters they could do with that... sheesh...

I agree, imagine if they just took the 'stock' character models from the original game and made them 28mm? Even at $20 a pop I'd still try and buy every single one (28mm Eisenhorn?).

yeah, in 28mm those figures would sell like hotcakes... doing Inq in 28mm with their ever increasing ability to make plastic one off models would be a license to print money. It's literally a bottomless well of one off figures.

I'm already cleaning out my closet to make room for my new specialty boxed sets. I'm guessing there will be something to see around summer but nothing comes out for a year.
