Meerkat Lives Matter! (But not to meerkats, apparently)

A new study of violent behavior in more than 1,000 mammal species found the meerkat is the mammal most likely to be murdered by one of its own kind... about 20 percent of meerkat deaths are murders.

Some of the animals with reputations for docility are actually more dangerous to each other than creatures known for their aggression. Chinchillas kill each other more often than brown bears turn on their own kind. New Zealand sea lions are more murderous than actual lions.

However, some amongst the law enforcement community are questioning the findings, saying that what the study calls 'murder' may be hard to prove.

"The rate of unsolved murders in meerkat society is notorious throughout the animal kingdom," notes mammalian murder statistician Steven Donaldson. "Honestly, when meerkat police find a dead body, they're much less likely to prove murder, or even identify a suspect than, say, marmot or spider monkey investigators. If somebody gets murdered, don't ask a meerkat."

The one on the right did it. And he's not sorry, either.
"Either way, if you do touch their junk, don't treat it like you want your own treated. Treat it WAY Better."
